First Annual Ken Sykes Memorial Run
exceeds all expectations.
On Saturday May 1st 2010, more than 140 people participated in the first annual Ken Sykes Memorial Run/Walk presented by McDougall Insurance and Financial at Zwicks Park.
The event is a fundraiser for the Quinte Children’s Foundation’s Reach for Success Bursary program. Organizers of the events had conservative estimates of 100 registrants, and together with sponsorships and pledges expected to raise approx. $10,000. However, with the tremendous support of Ken’s family, friends, colleagues and numerous others who collected pledges and committed to making this event a success, over $18,000
was raised for the local charity.
Top Male Runner awards went to Boyd Kalnay and Top Female Runner to Kim Sutherland; Kathryn Burns, who was a friend and colleague of Ken Sykes at O’Flynn Weese, LLP won top fundraiser securing over $2,000 in pledges! “Funds will be used to create a bursary in Ken’s name that will be presented to youth who have grown up in the care of the Hastings Children’s Aid Society and are pursuing post secondary education”, said Brandi Hodge, Executive Director of Quinte Children’s Foundation. “we are so excited by the outpouring of support for this event, it certainly speaks to the man that we are remembering today”.
